Transforming urological care through education, innovation, and excellence
The Rwanda Urological Association (RUA) was founded on the vision of Professor Emile Rwamasirabo and brought to life through the leadership of pioneering urologists, including Dr. Edouard Ngendahayo.
Pioneer of Urology in Rwanda
Pioneering Urologist & Co-founder
Prof. Rwamasirabo is widely recognized as the pioneer of urology in Rwanda. After completing his medical training at Dakar University, Senegal, and further specializing in General Surgery and Urology at Lille University, France, he returned home immediately after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. At a time when Rwanda had lost much of its professional workforce, Prof. Rwamasirabo stood as the country's sole urologist, dedicating himself to managing complex urological conditions in the midst of crisis.
His contributions went far beyond clinical service. He trained colleagues, mentored young doctors, and laid the foundation for the growth of urology in Rwanda. In 2012, together with his colleagues, he spearheaded the launch of the first in-country urology residency program, which has since produced eight Rwandan urologists. Through collaboration with COSECSA, this training pathway has also yielded an additional two urologists.
Today, thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of Prof. Emile Rwamasirabo and Prof. Theobald Hategekimana, Rwanda proudly counts 14 practicing urologists and 20 residents in training. Their vision and dedication have transformed urology in Rwanda from a one-man service into a vibrant specialty, ensuring access to high-quality urological care for the Rwandan people.
